10 years ago today i was in my room getting ready for school (8th grade). my alarm clock was actually a radio that would switch on when it was time for me to get up. the usual music program i would listen to in the mornings was not what came on, rather a news broadcast that one of the twin towers was on fire and early reports were stating that an airplane had crashed into it. i went into my parents' room (both snoozing) and woke my dad up and told him. both of my parents said that it was a joke or a lie but my dad got up and went downstairs and confirmed on the Internet that it HAD happened and it was a hijacked airplane. i went to school only to watch news coverage for 5/6 classes i had (ms. balch was a science teacher and didn't believe that it was okay to watch because she felt it was encouraging our enemies to continue to attack. different tokes for different folks.) i remember being really upset because my naaive mind thought "who doesn't like americans?!" i'm so grateful for all of the emergency response and public safety people who were there. to the invisible heros, victims, survivors, loved ones who lost, lost ones who loved, i am remembering you today.
